Exchange of routes by GPX between Google Maps and Kurviger

As far as I remember, we had this in old forum - but never transferred it to new forum, certailny not to Docu.

So I allow myself to reopen that as a possible contribution for Docu:

Exchange of routes between Google Maps and Kurviger

(VERSION 2018-10-21b - draft, uncompleted)

EXCHANGE FROM GOOGLE MAPS (GMAPS) TO KURVIGER

All the following steps realized on my Android 6 smartphone (internet connection necessary):

  1. Create a route by GMaps (in Browser or Android App).

In GMaps Browser Version:

A2. Open “3 bar menu” in the upper left corner.

A3. Click on “Karte teilen oder einbetten” and then on “Link kopieren”.

In GMaps Android App Version: [DOES NOT WORK AT PRESENT: URL of GMaps App can’t be read anymore by MapsTo GPX :frowning: - searching for solution!]

B2. Click “Share directions” in the “3 dots menue” in the upper right corner of GMaps.

B3. Click (= send send the URL to) “Clipboard” (or send it to yourself or others by E-Mail or SMS or, as in my case, to a second WhatsApp acount, which is the fastest way in most situations).

A4. Open mapstogpx.com in your PC browser.

B4. Open mapstogpx.com in your Smartphone browser.

  1. Insert here the “Clipboard” (or the URL stored before) and click “Let’s go”. [THIS WORKS IF URL COMES FROM GMAPS BROWSER VERSION, BUT FAILS AT PRESENT IF URL COMES FROM GMAPS APP VERSION]:

A6. The gpx will be created and downloaded to the PC.

A7. Open this GPX file in Kurviger Browser version as usual via “Import” as a new route.

B6. The gpx will be created and downloaded automatically to the smartphone, and at least my Android offers instantly after download to open the downloaded file (some seconds at the bottom of the screen), so just click on the “Open” button.

B7. The gpx will be opened as new route in Kurviger App.

EXCHANGE FROM KURVIGER TO GOOGLE MAPS (GMAPS)

The procedure vice versa (Kurviger > Maps) means showing a Kurviger route via GPX in GMaps for several purposes like quickly getting to the starting point of a Kurviger route:

IMPORTANT: Beginning steps (1-13) work only in the browser version of Maps
[there is no way to “Create Map” in “Your Places” by the Map app - or??]

  1. Export a Kurviger route as GPX.

  2. Open GMaps in browser.

  3. Open GMaps Menu (3 bars in the upper left corner).

  4. Open “Your Places”.

  5. Open “Maps”.

  6. Open “Create Map”.

  7. Open “Import”.

  8. Import (by drag&drop or by filename) the GPX.

  9. Kurviger Route will be shown in GMaps.

Now you may:

  1. Click on the starting point of the shown Kurviger route.

  2. Click on the “Directions to here” symbol - the navigation menu opens with this starting point as destination.

  3. Enter your real starting point, for example your home address.

  4. Now GMaps shows you a fast route to the starting point of your Kurviger route.

Now you may continue:

  1. Your new “New Places Map” is shown in Android GMaps too. You can long tap on the starting point of your Kurvinger route and GMaps will offer you one (or more) fast and direct navigation(s) to the starting point of your Kurvinger route (as in 13) (which indeed should be the same as shown in the browser version before, but perhaps completed with alternate routes like GMaps often does if possible).

SUPPLEMENT: STORING GMAPS ROUTES FOR LATER USE

In GMaps app I store ready routes simply by the following steps:

  1. In Navigation mode open the menu (3 dots in the upper right corner).

  2. Click on “Add route to Home screen” .

  3. GMaps will confirm by a short screen message.

  4. Now a link symbol button to this specific route appears on the desktop, where it is to find again quickly everytime it is needed during travelling and a simple click on the symbol opens this route in GMaps directly and starts navigation mode - what can be done easily even while riding/driving.

  5. When finished the trip I store all routes for later use by a symple drag&drop moving of the link button to a special subdirectory “Routes”, in which I can start navigation for every route again by simply clicking the symbol as above.

I need help:

May someone, who uses and ENGLISH GMaps, look out for the ENGLISH words in UI and menus, so I can insert then into the English text?

(Regarding Kurviger I can switch between English and German version, but this is not the case with GMaps - or does someone know how to do this?)

If switch device language and restart the Maps app, does it help?

Heyyyy - sometimes the easiest solutions are very close …

Yes, works well - THANK YOU! :+1:t4:

Will delete this and last 3 posts later, ok?

I need help:

Does anyone know a WORKING solution (website or application) which transforms a “Share route” URL information of Gmaps App to GPX?

Output of Gmaps App (not Browser!) has obviously changed fundamentally since I wrote my first manual and can’t be read any more by MapsToGPX. :frowning:

Looks like Google does not want us to use their data (or should I say our data) outside of google without paying a license fee. :disappointed:

Manfred

Of course - but Browser version data still work - so still some hope to find a way …

If not, at the moment there is only the way over the Browser Version - possible, but quite cumbersome on a smartphone.

You could always write your own app and access the API  I think up to 25.000 requests per day are free^^

, when I once get bored and have nothing else to do …

Thanks for updating the descriptions and double check if it still works.

I think we put this in the docu some time ago, see here.

Oooops - you are right!

Probably had in mind this only WIP state - and it was, before we started to present drafts for contributions to Docu first in Forum. So lost it out of view.

We may then edit the WIP entry by my new version now ?

Sure :+1:. That’s probably the easiest option.
