I have tried in vain to save a route to the SD card.
When importing a route I can select the SD card:
But when trying to export I can’t select the SD card.
What am I missing?
Settings → application → export folder
Is this related to this topic?

Android late versions get more and more restrictive about non-system apps writing on SD card. At least not without some exotic measures which we could think for the future. 
No, the app install location is not related to that.
Ich möchte dieses Thema auch noch einmal aufgreifen. Ich halte es für sinnvoll, dass man seine Routendateien auch auf der SD-Karte speichern kann. Andere können es doch auch, zum Beispiel die App “Geo Tracker”, die ich auch nutze. Den Hinweis von dir Robin auf den AS D8 Compiler kapier ich nicht, muss ich vielleicht auch nicht.
In dem verlinkten Thema geht es um App2SD, das ist etwas anderes.
Android erlaubt den Schreibzugriff auf die SD-Karte nur noch über Umwege. Es ist in der Zukunft angedacht eine Möglichkeit zu bieten wieder auf die SD-Karte zu schreiben (“wieder” weil es früher schon funktioniert hat aber Android in einer der letzten Versionen die SD-Karten Zugriffe geändert hat).
Android Q is even more restrictive to which public storage the apps can handle, so expect in the future some important changes to the allowed locations for map and route files. 
Hopefully at least the maps can stay on SD-card.
Don’t expect too much, it may be even difficult to keep them in internal storage’s public area.
Kurviger 1.8.1 allows the export folder in SD card, though in app folder due to Android restrictions.
/storage/XXXX-XXXX/Android/data/gr.talent.kurviger.pro/files
A file manager like Total Commander is more appropriate for advanced file management.

Nun brauch ich kein Backup mehr auf meine externe SD Karte.

Latest Android Q news are not good for app access on shared storage (internal or SD card).
Without developers rewrite their apps(!), the straightforward way will be app own folders.
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/gr.talent.kurviger.pro/files
